چکیده

Nowadays the video game industry is facing a big challenge: keep costs under control as games become bigger and more complex. Creation of game content, such as character models, maps, levels, textures, sound effects and so on, represent a big slice of total game production cost. Hence, the video game industry is increasingly turning to procedural content generation to amplify the cost-effectiveness of the efforts of video game designers. However, procedural methods for automated content generation are difficult to create and parametrize. In this work we study a Genetic Programming based procedural content technique to generate procedural terrains that do not require parametrization, thus, allowing to save time and help reducing production costs. Generated procedural terrains present aesthetic appeal; however, unlike most techniques involving aesthetic, our approach does not require a human to perform the evaluation. Instead, the search is guided by the weighted sum of two morphological metrics: terrain accessibility and obstacle edge length. Procedural terrains produced by this technique are already in use in a real video game.

Evolution of Artificial Terrains for Video Games Based on Accessibility

Diverse methods have been developed to generate terrains under constraints to control terrain features, but most of them use strict restrictions. However, there are situations were more flexible restrictions are sufficient, such as ensuring that terrains have enough accessible area, which is an important trait for video games. The Genetic Terrain Program technique, based on genetic programming,...

Procedural Planetary Multi-resolution Terrain Generation for Games

Terrains are the main part of an electronic game. To reduce human effort on game development, procedural techniques are used to generate synthetic terrains. However rendering a terrain is not a trivial task. Their rendering techniques must be optimal for gaming. Specially planetary terrains, which must account for precision and scale conversion. Multi-resolution models are best fit to planetary...

Modelling Video Games' Landscapes by Means of Genetic Terrain Programming - A New Approach for Improving Users' Experience

Terrain generation algorithms have an important role in video games: they can provide a realistic scenario for the game experience, or can help keep the user interested in playing by providing new landscapes each time he plays. Nowadays there are a wide range of techniques for terrain generation, but all of them are focused on providing realistic terrains, often neglecting other aspects (e.g., ...

Procedural Generation: Complex AAA games hire armies of designers to create the immense content that make up the game’s virtual world. If you are designing a game without such extensive resources, an attractive alternative for certain natural phenomena (such as terrains, trees, and atmospheric effects) is through the use of procedural generation. With the aid of a random number generator, a hig...
